Complete HD4870X2 vmod and biosflash.

Hi i am just done with modding a HD4870X2 gfx for my mate Mathis77 and i tought i would do a little guide so here it comes.
First of the 2 Vgpu mods.
Here is the solderpad on the back of the card for the gpu at the rear of the card.


And here is my own discovery the solderpad for the other gpu in front of the card on the back i dont think that others have found it and that is because it is hidden under the laquer on the print abd you have to scratch the laquer of whit a razorblade to get to the solderpad.


Now we just have to solder some wires to the 2 solderpoints so here we are first the gpumod for the gpu at the back of the card.




And then the gpumod for the gpu at the front of the card.




And now to solder two 50 Ohms multiturns vrs on the card.




Here is the Vgpu measurring spots for both gpumods


When this is done we will flash the card with the asus top bios so we can clock the card a little further than normal.

Asus smartdoctor for controlling the fan and oc the card if u dont like the ATI CCC and i you want you ca use Amdgputool but then you have to set the fan after you have ocet the card

With stock cooler on 100% i can get to bench at 890/990mhz easy and at 4ghz dualcore i got 100000+ in 3dmark03 and 21000 in 3dmark06

Jep i now but i dont think mine is bugged because you have to have a blank screen during the bench and i dident have that and in 3dmark2001 i got 80000+ score så it is a ok score in 3d03

Hi riska really impressive guide, way to go
Does the flashing with the Asus TOP BIOS require the v-mod and does the flashing work with all reference 4870X2 cards (I just bought a Club 3D)?
I read somewhere at XS forum that OC the 4870x2 really did not improve performance (maybe it was only in connection with the fishy 3DMark03 scores meaning I misunderstood this issue). Obviously you get better results in 3DMark scores after OC have you also tested the performance gain in games?

Thanks a lot mate, I have to try that. Do you think watercooling the modified 4870x2 will improve OC-ability and real life performance (I suppose only if I perform the v-mod)?

No you wil get further with watercool then with stock cooler even if you make the vmods

now im up running with my new killer-card

and i think im doing something wrong here - the PC restarts in all 3dmarks when i do even a little OC over the new ASUS top bios stock at 790/915

im giving it 1.425 at load and 1.30 idle - im not 100% if i have understand all things 100%

im calling you tomorrow, riska - its getting late now - and i dont wanna rush anything

You have to raise bothe the voltage on the cores are you doing that?
You have to turn both Vrs to 1.4v or so

i didnt raise them equally

but i can only see load on one of them because the other always shows the idle, thats correct?

i have now turned them both all way down again to 1.07 - so tomorrow i'll try again... fx. 5 rounds each one at a time until 1.30v then ill raise only 1/2 round or so - things getting very fast after 1.3v in load :-)

im making a dualboot Vista/XP too see if the card OCs better in XP - riska and I think it does. Nice to hear that Club3D makes the best 4870x2's :-)

I have tried 1.32 and 1.42 on both cores (load) and 3dmark06 restarts my PC after 10sec bench at 890, 850 and even 800mzh core - i have also tried "stock" core and 990mhz RAM thats the same, PC restarts

I'll be making the dualboot and try bench in XP on sunday - ill post the results here and on hwt.dk - i'm sure everything is just OK, its just me and my Vista i think that needs a little "tune up" :-)

hi there holmer, yes everything is super, when i dont OC mem or gpu - without raising vcore i cant OC either - its not very OCable at this point - im going to try OC again when i get XP up running on dualboot on sunday

im running on the same vista 64 installation with my last 3 motherboards - maybe theres a glitch or something that makes it so difficult? Im more to, that its me who makes the mistake - riska could OC it to 890/990 abouts, fanspeed 100%

the temps are superfine about 40c idle - and 52 load

i tried a OC at 850/950 and fanspeed 100% then everything seemed fine, then i turned down the fan to 40% and then the PC restarts in 3dmark - then i turned the fan back at 100% and the PC still restarts

So its kind of alive the card - and still im not sure im doing everything 100% ok with the vcore pod-adjustments

When I come home today from work im gonna try once again with volts at 1.40 and then fan at auto - then 10mhz steps at a time - im maybe using a too large jump in mhz

So im optimistic - im sure everything is 100% fine in HW

Hi Mathis77 I just flashed my Club3D as described in riska's brilliant guide. Things look good and I am able to OC further than the std. speed of the Asus TOP BIOS without errors in 3DMark03 (so far 817/930 is fine). I have not yet pushed it to the max since temps are rather high and I have not replaced the TIM. I will put it under water and then spank it. Just curious how your OC is going? The Catalyst drivers crapped out ater trying the Auto tune option and also after testing custom clocks. So a hint could be just to adjust the speed slowly and hit apply (and of course adjust the speed for both cores). It worked for me.

#riska looking forward to your watercooling v-mod guide . I am going for the EK - FC4870 X2 CF - Acetal but I have not seen any reviews of any of the 4870X2 waterblocks?

i have now reinstalled vista - CCC kept making erros at windows-startup and PC kept rebooting in games and benches even without OC

So im happy now that everything seems fine, no errors, no restarts so far

im gonna try OC a little later - today is warhammer online day hehe

and when I do, ill make small steps in OC like u did - thx for tips

Hi chaps i'm after some help.

I flashed my card to the Asus top BIOS (happy to provide) but now even at stock setting i'm getting corrupt graphics unless I underclock the memory below 840Mhz

Like an ***** I never took backups of my originals. I've tried a few other standard BIOSs but i'm still having the same problem.

I believe it is because i'm using VER 011.007.... BIOS versions wheras my card had a new 011.016... and I think they may have changed memory timing or something.

Anyway has anyone got 011.016 or later BIOS they can let me have?
